Mainau Island

Cycling along Lake Constance - Mainau Island

Mainau Island is widely known as a place for experiencing special and unusual aspects of nature. The island, covering a total area of 45 hectares - making it the third-largest island in Lake Constance - offers a diverse host of attractions throughout the year. Highlights include the precious “Arboretum”, originally built by Grand Duke Frederick in 1853, which exhibits approximately 250 different types of wood. Furthermore, one should mention the perennial garden, as well as five seasonal gardens, each covering 100 square metres / 1076 square feet, as well as the palm tree and butterfly house. The three-winged baroque castle, of which some parts are inhabited by the Swedish noble family of Bernadotte, hosts exhibitions and concerts as well as housing a cozy cafe.
