Werd monastery

Cycling Lake Constance - Werd monastery

Werd monastery is ancient and minute, situated on an island close to Stein am Rhein. It is accesible via a long pier from the mainland. It was founded in 900 AD in ministry to the Otmar Hallows. This abbot from St. Gallen came into a highly political dispute between Franconians and Alemanni, losing the struggle for power between the Bishop of Constance and the St. Gallen monastery. He was exiled to the island of Werd, where he died in the year 759.

For several centuries, Werd monastery was home to Benedictine monks, while today it is home to five Franciscan monks. Both the island and the monastery’s chapel are a great destination if you want to take a break from cycling.
