From the outside, the roman catholic parish church of St. George in Oberzell on the Island of Reichenau seems rather nondescript. However, it is an impressive document of the island’s rich religious and cultural history - leading to its addition (in conjunction with Reichenau monastery) to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites in 2000. Abbot Hatto III had the church built in the 9th century. What makes the church so special are its murals, rare treasures from Ottonian times, that are situated in the church’s nave. These 8 large murals depict Jesus’ miracles.
